The 2014 edition of the British Poker Awards has been set to take place on March 3rd. This year, the festivities will be held at London’s own Hippodrome Casino and the expected line-up will include numerous luminaries of the British poker world.
The West End casino has quickly become a centre of poker activity in Europe and is home to some of the biggest cash games and tournaments on the continent. In teaming up with online poker giant PokerStars, the pair will definitely provide a memorable night for all attendees.
In 2013, there was one name among British poker players that stood out above all others, and for good reason. Sam Trickett had what could only be described as a banner year. In the most prestigious tournament of all time, Trickett finished second and netted himself and his backers a more than $10 million payday. In addition, his exploits at the huge cash games in Macau were the stuff of legends. Thus, it was no surprise when Trickett took down three of the coveted British Poker Awards, including Player of the Year honours.
For this year, Trickett will be facing some stiff competition. While he has had strong finishes at the Aussie Millions and a Premier League Poker event, some insiders are pointing to a different player to be the man of the hour in 2014. Matt Ashton made waves last summer by just barely missing out on taking the World Series of Poker Player of the Year top spot. For his performance, he collected three nominations and is a favourite to win in the Performance of the Year category.
Many British poker players are also predicting that online superstars will have a solid place at this year’s awards shows. Among the online phenoms, Alex Millar is one of the most talked-about names. Millar, who plays under the Kanu7 moniker, has been a silent killer, playing and defeating a veritable who’s who list of online high stakes regulars. A recent cover appearance on the January issue of Bluff Magazine may help his chances of taking down a few awards of his own.
Players and poker fans who would like to attend the 2014 British Poker Awards will find tickets available soon. Voting is already done, but all nominations can be found at the website, which will be updated as more information is released.
