EPT Barcelona ME Day 1b – Records Broken

Record Breaker

A precedent was set in the Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event in Barcelona last week with a new record field for the tour and now the same thing has happened for the European Poker Tour after Day 1b brought in a mind blowing 1,010 players.

Once added to the 475 that took part on Day 1a it brought a total of 1,485 thus far with there still the possibility for players to buy-in before the start of Day 2 today. This makes it the largest field for a European Poker Tour in Europe and is actually only beaten by a couple of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Events in the Bahamas.

We expected it to be big but many would be surprised at just how big this Season opening event has turned out to be.

There were 890 players that survived Day 1b and will now be joining the 279 survivors of Day 1a into Day 2 later today. Topping the chip counts from Day 1b is Jose Lamarca Capa after his haul of 193,300 was not only enough to be the biggest of the day but also the biggest across both opening day flights.

Mixed PokerStars Team Pro Fortunes

As expected there was a large PokerStars contingent taking part on Day 1b and their success really was a mixed bag. Theo Jorgensen, Jake Cody, Ivan Demidov, Marcin Horecki, Joao Nunes, Liv Boeree, Andre Akkari and Daniel Negreanu all made it through to Day 2 and will be looking to improve their positions and attempt to get into the money.

On the other hand Bertrand Grospellier, George Danzer, Jason Mercier, Luca Pagano and Fatima Moreira de Melo all busted out throughout the day. As for non PokerStars players, through went the likes of Mike McDonald, Pius Heinz, Dan Smith and Sofia Lovgren whilst out of the event went Annette Obrestad, Steve O’Dwyer, and Zimnan Ziyard among many others.

Day 2 is set to see about a thousand players returning to the felt at 12pm local time today, which is quite a nightmare logistically but a dream for the event as a whole. Join us tomorrow to see which players manage to get out of that huge field and into Day 3.
