GPI Update – Close At The Top

Global Poker Index

The Global Poker Index has again recently updated their respective rankings and we can see just which players have managed to put themselves in contention following the recent World Series of Poker.

Both the GPI 300 which ranks the top 300 tournament players in the world (based on results over three years)and the GPI Player of the Year race which ranks players on their results this year have both seen plenty of changes since the last update and the race is now certainly on with just five months of the year remaining.

The race at the top of the GPI 300 this time around is much closer than it has been for a while. Dan Smith still holds on to the top spot but he is literally hanging on to the place by a thread with Ole Schemion right in behind him.

The only changes in that top ten are Paul Volpe and Alex Bilokur trading places and the arrival of Jacob Schindler who moves into 9th place.

Further down the rankings we had many other players making jumps too with the likes of Justin Young, Kevin MacPhee and Mike Leah all improving their positions substantially. Those falling down included PokerStars Team Pro Liv Boeree, Kimmo Kurko and Giacome Fundaro, though they could reverse those changes if they have a good couple of months at the felt.

As for those coming into the top 300 and those falling out of them, the biggest names were Amanda Musumeci and Marko Neumann respectively.

GPI 300 Top Ten

1st) Dan Smith – 4015.56

2nd) Ole Schemion – 4014.71

3rd) Daniel Negreanu – 3765.82

4th) Byron Kaverman – 3547.07

5th) Paul Volpe – 3460.52

6th) Erik Seidel – 3398.24

7th) Alex Bilokur – 3385.89

8th) Jason Mercier – 3237.07

9th) Jacob Schindler – 3226.16

10th) Scott Seiver – 3220.42

As for the player of the year race on the Global Poker Index, Dan Smith is also heavily involved after jumping up a massive 61 places to find himself in third position. He still trails Alex Bilokur and Keven Stammen but with a good few months left this year he has plenty of time to close that gap and jump ahead of them if he can put in a few more good performances much like the ones he produced during the World Series of Poker.
