New casino to open in Southampton?

Casino firm Aspers have announced its intention of bidding for a multimillion pound license to open a super casino in Southampton at Royal Pier, as The Daily Echo reports

Aspers already runs two similar establishments in the United Kingdom, and is the only company operating super casinos in the British islands. To get an idea about what kind of investment they have in mind, it is enough to say that a regular casino can’t have more than 20 slot games, whereas a super casino features 150 of them. These are just some of the impressive figures that the casino company can brag about, but the impact on the local economy will also be considerable.

To start with, the Royal Pier site could be brought back to life and hundreds of people will be employed by the casino company. It comes as no surprise that the Associated British Ports Authority also supports the project and so does the city Council.

It would be an understatement to say that this is an ambitious project and there are eight distinct authorities that will need to work together for a license to be awarded. Aspers still have a long way to go and it would take as much as a couple of years before this project will become a reality.

The good news is that the local authorities are thrilled at the prospect of breathing new life into the Royal Pier and Aspers’ proposition is the best they’ve got. Residents as well as the port authorities will be consulted in the next couple of months, as all concerned parties need to voice their opinion on this matter.
