Scotty Nguyen

Scotty NguyenWhen you think of many of the characters that have been involved in poker over the last 25 years or so, one of the most exuberant has to be that of Scotty Nguyen. Nguyen is a highly skilled poker player that has seen both highs and lows throughout his lifetime, but has ultimately come through all of them to be recognized as one of the best players of all time.

Despite winning and losing a million dollars at an early age, Nguyen was back to his winning ways in 1997 when he took own the first of five World Series of poker bracelets. This was for $150,000 in the $2k PLO Hi/Lo event and although he lost that money quite quickly, he was partially staked in the 1998 WSOP Main Event by Mike Matusow and went on to win it outright for $1 million.

He had to pay Matusow one third of the $1 million as part of the staking deal, but the win gave him the lift he needed just at the right time. He has since gone on to win another three WSOP titles, a World Poker Tour title and has amassed career earnings of more than $12 million.

Perhaps one WSOP he may want to forget would be the 2008 HORSE bracelet he won when drunk. He did apologise afterwards for his behaviour though, so it does show that he can admit he was wrong.

He almost added another WSOP bracelet to his collection just last year, when he made to final tables and finished 8th and 2nd in the $3k PLO Hi/Lo and $5k PLO Hi/Lo events respectively.

Just to clarify how much his game and contribution to poker has been respected, just last week he was inducted alongside Tom McEvoy into the Poker Hall Of Fame. He was obviously thrilled to be placed into such elite company, a place that he really does deserve.
