Jen Harman Charity Event Raises $325,000

As mentioned in previous news pieces on this very site, Jennifer Harman has been doing her bit to help support the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Previously a $10 MTT on Full Tilt Poker raised more than $30,000 for the charity, and an event at the Venetian in Las Vegas added another $325,000 to the kitty. Pun fully intended, of course.

The event was held last Friday as many of the world’s best known poker players made their way along the red carpet, some accompanied by a dog or cat. Those who decided to stop to pose for the cameras were Daniel Negreanu (accompanied by a dog), Phil Ivey (kitten in arms), and Barry Greenstein, although we’re not sure if he had a companion with him on the red carpet.

The poker tournament itself attracted 251 players, including Brad Booth, Eli Elezra, Todd Brunson, Doyle Brunson, David Singer, and David “The Devilfish” Ulliot, who might have had a few dogs howling with his rendition of “Great Balls of Fire”. Just kidding, he’s actually rather good.

The tournament was a $300 donation (buy-in), with unlimited $200 re-buys (also going to charity) for the first hour. The winner was awarded a $10,000 seat to the WSOP Main Event, as well as a trophy and watch donated by Curtis & Co.

While Ivey and Benyamine were tossing $5,000 and $1,000 chips as direct donations to the charity, Howard and Susie Lederer donated a total of $55,000, while Matt Savage ended up with a new resident at Chez Savage – a newly adopted cat, while event organiser Lisa Wheeler took home a bulldog. A great day all round, for poker players and Nevada’s less fortunate animals alike.
