Magnificent WSOP Win For Woo

Atlanta resident and poker pro David ‘The Magnificent’ Woo saw off a huge field of 2,719 other players at Event 39 of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas on Monday to take home $631,550 along with a winner’s bracelet.

The final table of the $1,500 No Limit Hold ’Em competition began with everyone chasing Thom Werthmann, a 38-year-old poker professional from Michigan, competing for his second WSOP bracelet after defeating Layne Flack heads-up in a Pot Limit Hold 'Em event in 2005.

However, it was South Korea-born Woo who eliminated Jim Paras on the fifth hand to take the chip lead before watching Michael Glasser and Thanh Dat Tran fall by the wayside. Paras received $58,290 for his ninth place finish while Glasser walked away with $85,394 for eighth and Tran $113,240 for seventh.

Curtis Early and Werthmann were the next to fall after going bust at the hands of Woo and walked away with $150,368 and $91,209 for their sixth and fifth placed finishes.

Habib Khanis, a 52-year-old store manager from San Diego, was the next to go after busting out on the very next hand and received $233,906 for finishing fourth.

Canadian player Matt Wood then eliminated Eric Beren for third spot and $278,460 before eventually losing a heads-up battle with Woo and taking home $389,844 for second place.

“Every time I play poker is a learning experience,' said Woo.

'I would have been sick with anything less than first place. I really expected to win.'

Bracelet winner at this year’s WSOP have come from nine different nations including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Russia and the United States.
