Greenwood Outlasts Mouritsen To Take WSOP Bracelet

Canadian online poker player Maxwell Greenwood survived 33 hands of heads-up play against Rene Mouritsen on Friday to take home his first ever World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet and the accompanying $693,444 first prize.

The 23-year-old became the third player from north of the border to win a gold bracelet at this year’s WSOP by outlasting 878 other competitors during Event 44, the $1,000 Buy-In No-Limit Hold'em with Re-Buys. The event had a prize pool totalling over $3.2 million, the largest in WSOP history for this event, helped by 2,508 re-buys and add-ons and Greenwood, who recently graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in political science, stated that he plans to buy a house with his winnings.

Coming into the final table, Greenwood was in the middle of the pack in terms of chips with everyone chasing Jesse Chinni. However, things did not go well for the Maryland resident and he finished in fifth spot to take home $183,069 after he losing his chips to Danish player Albert Iversen on hand 22. Scott ‘SCTrojans’ Freeman was the next to fall and he walked away with $223,572 followed by Iversen with $267,314.

At the beginning of heads-up play, Denmark native Mouritsen had a small chip lead but Greenwood soon made up the difference by winning eight out the final ten hands. Mouritsen took home $445,523 for finishing in second place, the third time he has done so at a WSOP event in less than a year, after going all-in on hand 129.
