Monday 30th June 2008 WSOP Event #45, $50,000 H.O.R.S.E.: Scotty Nguyen Is The Champ, Baby!
The final table of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event had it all: star players, tons of action, and a lot of beer. While Scotty Nguyen ploughed through Michelob and poker players hand-in-hand, the rest of us remembered just how good it is when Scotty wins a big one.
Last year saw Nguyen blow a golden chance to rise again to the top of the poker hierarchy after leading with twelve left in the Main Event only to crash out in eleventh. Many looked nervously as he edged his way towards the win, almost as if the fall was bound to come. This time Scotty kept things under control, eventually eliminating Michael DeMichele in second.
The final table was, as anticipated with such an elite entry, a stacked one. Scotty Nguyen was joined by another Main Event champion, Huck Seed, as well as fellow professionals Barry Greenstein and Erick Lindgren. It was DeMichele though who posed the biggest problem though, holding a comparable stack to Nguyen, with Lindgren niggling away in third. By the time the two players had seen off Lindgren, it was the 1990 Champion who was in firm control though, and he duly rounded off the win when his AT dominated – and stayed in front of – DeMichele’s A3.
'The $50K H.O.R.S.E. event is the best all around player...#1 in the world. Nobody can walk up to me and say, Scotty, you're second, baby' said Nguyen after the win. Too right Scotty – this one’s all over, baby.
