Garner leads the way in WSOP main event

The main event of the 2008 World Series of Poker is underway with Mark Garner leading the field with 205,000 chips.

Around 1,300 players started the tournament on day 1A but this was whittled down to half by the end of the Thursday.

Garner finished 25th in 2006 but has taken an early lead in this year's competition after a strong run late in the day.

In second place is Brandon Adams with 170,000.

Despite a number of celebrity entries this year, few progressed to the next stage, with National Hockey League star Brad May and ER actor Mekhi Pfifer crashing out early.

However, former sitcom star Ray Romano made it to the second day of play, ending with 61,000 in chips.

He said: "I played tight as all hell and I got a couple of hands and I made a little bit of money, but I could have made more money. I fell asleep reading Doyle Brunson’s book last night.”

The main event has been won twice by Brunson in 1976 and 1977, a feat matched only by Johnny Chan and Johnny Moss and surpassed by Stu Ungar, who has taken the bracelet home a record three times.
