Minister Vetoes Svenska Spel Online Poker

In Sweden, Finance Minister Anders Borg has demanded tighter regulations for online poker games run by Svenska Spel, the State-owned gambling monopoly.

Svenska Spel received permission from the Swedish Government in late-2005 to operate Internet poker games in its own jurisdiction but Borg, a member of the ruling Moderate party elected to power in 2006, has now vetoed these plans and called for stricter controls.

This latest announcement has dashed any plans Svenska Spel may have had at becoming a major player along with other international State-controlled gaming companies in the global online poker market.

The Minister has also demanded that Svenska Spel clearly and regularly inform players of their total winnings and losses.
