Can Machines Play Poker Better Than Humans?

A computer has shown that while poker can be a game of very high emotions, it is one which even a computer can play using cold hard number crunching. Scientists at the University of Alberta in Canada have devised the world’s most powerful poker playing computer which can literally adapt its game to any style and any situation. A recent six game competition saw the computer lose the first two against a former poker champion, yet move in and three out of the final four games, with the other game a draw.<br /> <br /> The computer is called Polaris and can literally learn as it plays, analysing the style and approach of competitors and adapting its own style to suit the moment. In order to create a base from which the computer was able to move ahead and learn, it has played a staggering 8 billion games against itself to try and learn the various aspects of the game.<br /> <br /> The results of this research show that while poker is a game which is both very cold and very emotional at the same time, the computer systems available today are actually starting to show human like traits. Perhaps we might see a commercial man against computer competition over the next few years, now that would be interesting!
