Williams: Poker betting must have a purpose

People should not bet while playing poker unless they have a good reason, card sharp David Williams has said.

In an advice column on Bodog Nation, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) titlist said there should always be a purpose behind putting money in the pot and that following this mantra has helped to contribute to his success.

"Always bet with an objective in mind," he remarked.

"Bet for value. Bet for information. Bet for protection. Bet to block. Bet to bluff."

Williams is in the top 25 of the Hendon Mob's list of tournament poker's biggest earners, rankings ahead of the likes of former WSOP main event winner Greg Raymer and World Poker Tour Championship victor David Chiu.

He started off his career as a Magic: The Gathering player, before teaching himself how to play no-limit Texas hold'em. Top European competitor Marcel Luske helped to mentor him along the way.
