Bachus Draws Uneasy Comparisons

Fresh from being chastised earlier this week by a Canadian academic for incorrectly citing research into problem gambling, some quotes drawing a seeming comparison between online gambling and child pornography have since come to light from American Congressman Spencer Bachus. The Alabama Republican is a staunch anti-gambling advocate and used some harsh words to help defeat the Payments System Protection Act in the House Committee on Financial Services in late-June. The Act was the brainchild of Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank and Texas Republican Ron Paul and would have rolled back the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which forbids banks and financial institutions from transferring funds to or from an online gambling site excepting Internet lotteries and horse racing. 'The fastest growing addiction in America is not drugs, it's gambling,' said Bachus. 'We are going to try to stop child pornography and illegal gambling over the Internet. We don't want you partnering, as the FBI says, with child pornography sites and pornography sites.” Bachus also stated that problem gambling doubles within ten miles of a gambling facility and claimed his motivation behind opposing the Act was to protect youth. 'The Internet puts that gambling facility right in the home, right in the dorm room, right in the bedroom of the teenager or college student,' said the eight-time Representative for Alabama’s rural Sixth District. http://hardboiledpoker.blogspot.com/2008/06/uigea-lives-hr-5767-dies-in-committee.html http://www.onlinecasinoreports.com/news/opinions/2008/7/22/bizarre-attack-on-online-gambling.php
