Kahnawake Gaming Commission Clarifies Stance

Following last week’s news that it had been singled out for criticism by the Chairman of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), former Senator Alfonse D’Amato, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission licensing authority has released an official statement regarding the situation with operator Ultimate Bet. Kahnawake oversees numerous online poker sites using Internet services in Canada and the statement was made through its legal counsel, Murray Marshall, to information portal PokerNews.com. “Kahnawake Gaming Commission has been continuously regulating online gaming for over nine years, longer than most, if not all, other jurisdictions,” read the statement. “During that period of time, Kahnawake has proven to be a world leader with regulations and methodologies that have established a regulatory environment in which online gaming can be conducted fairly and securely. The Commission’s success as a regulator is evidenced by the fact that a significant percentage of the online gaming industry has chosen to locate and operate within Kahnawake. Given the length of time that it has regulated this new industry and the significant number of licensees under its control, the Commission's record has been exemplary.” The Commission revealed that it had been engaged for several months in an ‘in-depth investigation’ of the Ultimate Bet cheating scandal and that this had ‘yielded a number of key findings’ that would enable it to issue a decision 'on the appropriate steps to be taken’ in the next several days. “It should be stressed that the Commission’s primary concern throughout both matters was to ensure that affected players were fully reimbursed and that corrective measures were implemented to prevent against any further incidents of cheating,” read the statement. “Both of these objectives have been accomplished, as evidenced by the fact that the recent concerns that have been raised about the Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet matters are not being driven by affected players.”
