Phelps hopes to tackle WSOP

Fresh from winning a record-breaking eight gold medals at the Olympic Games in Beijing, US swimmer Michael Phelps has suggested that the World Series of Poker (WSOP) could be the next major sports event in his sights.

The 23-year-old told the Baltimore Sun newspaper that while he may have to brush up on his skills on the felt first, he would love to take part in the biggest event on the poker calendar.

"I think it would be cool to play in the WSOP," commented Phelps.

"My game is a little off right now, so I'll have to start improving it a little bit."

Numerous celebrities have found success at poker over the years, most notably Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Tilly.

The Californian, who is in a relationship with famed competitor Phil Laak, won a WSOP bracelet back in 2005 and has landed in the money on three other occasions during her career.
