Thursday 4th September 2008 Dublin gains poker crown
Dublin has overtaken London to be named this year's top poker-playing city in Europe.
The Irish capital was chosen over the British city by Bluff Europe magazine on the strength of its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Commenting on the decision, editor Philip Conneller said there was only ever one contender for this year's title. He remarked: "Dublin's poker players are a more close-knit bunch and have a reputation for being friendlier and more laid-back than London's." Bluff Europe added that the popularity of poker on a grassroots level in growing steadily in the city. Indeed, Dublin was said to be seeing increased membership of its poker societies and pub poker leagues. The city is also home to event organiser Dublin Poker Nights, which runs various sessions of the card game for both amateurs and professional players across the region. In addition, it also sets up various charity fundraising nights.
