Poker in Asia 'can grow'

Although poker in Asia is a "new concept" it can grow to become popular, according to PokerPlayer magazine editor Dave Woods.

The phenomenon will not happen overnight but the game's status in the continent "will gradually deepen", he said.

His comments follow the Asian Poker Tour's hosting of an event in Chinese administrative region Macau, which has been regarded as a success by an array of poker commentators.

"I think it will become big over there because it's a very good competitive gambling game," Mr Woods stated.

It may take time for it to develop as Asia has a culture that is not used to the game, the editor explained.

Commenting further on the potential of Asia as poker-playing continent, Mr Woods suggested that there is already a "a deep embedded culture of games" in the region, which may be a reason why poker can stir up sufficient interest.
