ESPN struggles to make recorded WSOP pay

While we await the start of the final table of this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament it seems as though the much heralded TV coverage by the ESPN channel has yet to pay off. At the moment the broadcaster is showing highlights of the start of the tournament earlier this year as a prelude to the forthcoming final stages, but viewing figures are not what they had hoped.

It seems that those who are interested in playing and watching poker have either caught the news in the media or from the mass of online poker news sites available today. The speedy circulation of details of each and every day of WSOP so far has ensured that enthusiasts know what is happening within hours of the event and taped recordings months later are not catching the eye.

This puts the likes of ESPN in a very difficult situation because the cost of screening poker live will be expensive and unlikely to repay the costs in the short term. The TV companies really need to find a cost affective way of getting major poker tournaments on live TV as this is sure to improve viewing figures substantially and increase advertising revenue.
