While President Putin was fighting the new cold war and trying to play poker with the West over some very serious issues, he was also addressing the problem of poker in the country itself. In a move to take away the power and influence which the Georgian warlords have over gambling in Russia, a law was passed which made it illegal to play poker outside of four stipulated areas throughout the region – European Russia (2), Siberia (1) and the Far East (1).
Even though the move had affectively killed poker in Russia stone dead, President Putin did not bank on a fight back from the poker playing community which took to the high court. They managed to get poker reclassified as a sport therefore making it immune from the new gambling regulations. It was a brave move when the leading Sports Agency in Russia accepted the ruling making poker a sport and now it has never been more popular.
