Online poker growth 'continues'

The growth of online poker and horse racing has not yet ended, according to one industry expert.

Robin Le Prevost, head of the E-Commerce Development department for the State of Alderney, said that these two pursuits have not been negatively affected by the current global financial crisis.

Apparently, there is little evidence to suggest that the sector has suffered in the same way as other businesses around the world.

Online gambling as a whole is "largely unaffected" by the credit crunch, he added.

"What we are seeing is that the growth in those activities [poker and horse racing] is continuing," the expert explained.

ICM Research recently conducted a study - published by the Gambling Commission - that indicated 8.8 per cent of consumers had taken part in some form of remote gambling during the year to June 2008.

Remote gambling was defined as betting via a computer, mobile phone or interactive/digital TV.
