US poker player takes the record prize

The record £1 million first prize on offer at the European Poker Tour (EPT) London showdown was won by an American poker star.

Michael Martin, who is 24 years old, walked away with the seven-figure sum after a weekend of card game activity in the English capital.

Almost 600 players were involved in the EPT event, including card sharps Victoria Coren, Chris Moneymaker and tennis legend Boris Becker.

Moneymaker was one of three World Series of Poker champions to take part in the competition - the others being Joe Hachem and Greg Raymer.

Martin won the tournament when a four on the turn added to his 4-4 hand and beat Swedish player Mike Tureniec's K-9.

The event followed the EPT London Open, the second leg of the fifth season.

Over the coming weeks, the tour will head to the Hungarian Open in Budapest, before turning up in Warsaw for the Polish Open in November.
