Fry Wins In European Poker Tour in Budapest

Will Fry outlasted 531 other players to win the inaugural European Poker Tour (EPT) in Budapest over the weekend to take home a cheque for $748,690. The 28-year-old winner hails from Nottingham, England, and has been playing poker since the age of six. However, the former croupier and art student only took up Texas Hold‘em eight years ago before making poker his full-time profession, specialising in online cash games. Fry won his first major live event at the $5,466 sell-out tournament when his pocket jacks beat the Ace-Six of 35-year-old Romanian Ciprian Hrisca and, as part of his prize, he has been rewarded with a seat to the upcoming $12,566 EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo. “They were the first good cards I’d had in ages,” said Fry. “Up until then I’d been re-raising with rubbish. But, if I get good cards, I can be pretty dangerous.” A total of 157 players from PokerStars.com competed in the four-day event including 104 who had won their seats online. Alex Kravchenko fared best out of the eight Team PokerStars.com professional players in the field, finishing 23rd for $13,368. EPT presenter Kara Scott was also sponsored by PokerStars.com and followed her 104th place finish in the World Series of Poker Main Event with a finish in 52nd place for $9,357. “The EPT has once again proved that we can move into emerging markets like Hungary and provide a sell-out tournament,” said John Duthie, founder of the EPT. “The support from the local players has been overwhelming and players have also been happy to travel from all over the world to attend the inaugural event in Budapest.”
