Eastgate clinches WSOP glory

Peter Eastgate defeated Ivan Demidov heads-up in a somewhat one-sided final session to win the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event today (November 11th).

The 22-year-old Dane caught his Russian opponent in several big bluffs to amass an insurmountable chip lead and claim the first prize of $9 million (£5.8 million) at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Eastgate's triumph in poker's most prestigious tournament makes him the youngest ever WSOP main event winner. Phil Hellmuth previously held the record for his victory as a 24-year-old in 1989.

Demidov, who entered the final session 21 million behind Eastgate in the chip count, was unable to cope with his opponent's aggressive style and will console himself with $5.8 million for second place.

"I called way too much and it cost me a lot of chips. I also made a few big bluffs at the wrong time," the Moscow-based player told the WSOP website.

Dennis Phillips, an amateur player from St Louis, was chip leader at the start of the nine-man final table but exited in third place on Monday.
