Is psychology the new tool of the modern poker player?

Peter Eastgate, the winner of the recent World Series of Poker Championship, has introduced a new thread of thought into the poker industry suggesting that psychology and knowing how your opponent works is as important as your basic poker skills. But is this really as simple as Peter Eastgate suggests?

The new World Series of Poker Champion has suggested that monitoring your opponents in the early stages of the tournament is vital if you are to understand how they think and what they feel. Eastgate suggests that he got to a stage at the final table where he sometimes knew what an opponent was going to do before they did it. While this all sounds very scientific and complex there are many tell-tale signs regarding nerves and confidence.

Some players will twitch when nervous and other will play quick hands when they are confident although there are many many more characteristics which you will pick up along the way. However, some players are aware they are being monitored and have learned to adapt their style and their characteristics to mask their real feelings. Sunglasses, caps and an array of other "equipment" can help to hide your inner thoughts and facial movements from your opponents.
