Is online poker the saviour of the casino industry?

As we see more and more casino groups hitting financial trouble, with many looking to apply for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, there is a feeling that online gambling in the form of poker and casinos may well be the saviour of the industry. There is a general feeling that the situation for the off-line casino industry will get worse before it gets better and some players will migrate to the online sector.

Perversely, it seems as though the US casino giants have the most to lose due to the ban on online gambling in the US. As a consequence they have not been able to build up a presence online to pick up their US customers who may be looking at this alternative medium. One of the main fears now for the US casino industry is the fact that when online gambling is made legal they will have been hit so hard by the recession that overseas counterparts could grab the lion’s share of the online industry in the US.

Online poker companies have a very clear cost base which they can increase or reduce by the size of their marketing and promotional spending. This therefore makes it easier for the online sector to react to changes in the economy and sector.
