WSOP Ratings Increase

Over two million people watched last week’s final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) take place in Las Vegas after its 117-day break, a 52 percent increase over last year’s numbers. Organiser Harrah’s Entertainment and broadcaster ESPN delayed the WSOP’s final table until November 8 in order to renew interest in poker and receive the subsequent bump in overall ratings. This decision seems to have proved justified as the broadcaster reported that 2.36 million people in 1.9 million homes across America tuned in to see 22-year-old Dane Peter Eastgate become the youngest champion by defeating Ivan Demidov heads-up. The WSOP 2007 saw 1.55 million people in 1.25 million households tune in to watch Jerry Yang win the coveted title. ESPN revealed that non-final events for this year’s competition saw an average of 1.13 million viewers in 900,000 homes, which was also up from last year’s 981,000 people in 815,000 locations. Although no plans have yet been announced regarding next year’s final table, rumours abound that the success of this month’s event will see the WSOP 2009 also delayed until November in order to further increase viewership.
