Who will win the online poker regulation battle?

As economies around the world continue to fall there is concern within the poker industry that many governments around the world will be looking to maximise income from this very lucrative area of business. As more and more off-line casinos hit trouble it seems as though the online casino industry is benefiting very often at their expense. When you consider that many US states pull in millions of dollars a year from their casino licences it will surely only be a matter of time before they look to regulate the online industry.

The UK government has been very full vocal in suggestions that it would like to become a central player in the online poker industry although recent mumblings in the US seem to indicate a change of strategy from the US government who would have the upper hand in any regulatory dealings. We are talking about literally billions of dollars of tax income at stake as and when a central regulatory system can be instigated but who will control the tax flows?

It seems inevitable at some point that the poker companies around the world will need to sit down around a table with the leading governments such as the US and the UK although the European Union is also been looking to play a more central role in the future.
