Mexican poker championship called off after administrative mix-up

Today 242 international poker players are counting the cost of a visit to the Marival Resorts and Suites venue in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico after an international poker tournament was called off at the last minute. The event was hosted by the Mexican partner of Poker Stars and despite prior approval from the Ministry of Interior in Mexico the tournament was suspended on day one when local officials made a surprise visit to the venue.<br /> <br /> When the tournament was cancelled there were still 89 players in the running for the prize and they were forced to take just $5,000 each from the prize pool. While there was a $500 addition for the inconvenience caused, each and every player at the event had paid $2,500 to attend and there are likely to be legal proceedings for reimbursement of the entrance fee and associated costs.<br /> <br /> There is mystery as to why the tournament was closed down as local officers had been in attendance since the beginning and suddenly changed their attitude, withdrawing the gaming licence required to continue. Even though Poker Stars then attempted to resolve the situation, after 24 hours of discussions there was no progress and the tournament itself was abandoned. This does not bode well for the future of Mexican poker with large promoters unlikely to consider the country in the short to medium term.
