Smoking ban costs Australian poker machines up to $1.7 million a day

The Australian smoking ban is costing pubs and clubs up to $1.7 million a day in lost poker machine revenue which has the potential to decimate the workforce and industry and put at risk further charitable donations from the sector. Poker machines have seen their revenue fall by $616 million during the last financial year and most of this has been put down to the smoking ban.

The office of liquor, gaming and racing has confirmed the figures which are far worse than anybody else had expected. When you also consider the 12% decline in poker machine revenue for Star City's casinos this puts the total figure nearer $900 million which is not only a massive chunk for the industry but an enormous loss of taxes for the state.

As the recession deepens in Australasia there are growing calls to at least lift the smoking ban until the industry gets back on its feet or at worst reduce the impact by changing the criteria. Many people do not believe that the government, and others around the world, have thought through the potential economic impact of a smoking ban which is only being seen now that the recession is in full flow.
