If poker is so popular on the internet why the US ban?

While confirmation that poker is one of the more popular phrases searched for on the Internet will come as no surprise to many in the industry, many are still mystified about the US ban. The US market was one of the fastest growing online poker markets in the world prior to the US authorities banning the use of online payment systems to fund online poker games. They could not ban poker itself so they chose the second best option and threatened the online payment companies with action if they funded poker websites.

There has been continuous speculation of late about a possible change of heart with the Barack Obama camp apparently open to a potential reversal of the online poker ban. However, for those poker players looking at a quick turnaround they can probably sit tight as the US economy as a whole will take precedent for many months to come. Behind the scenes in Congress there does seem to be a move towards a new regulatory framework for online poker companies although there has been no official confirmation as yet. Quite how this would work in practice remains to be seen, but many US poker players are itching to go back online.
