Marty Smyth from Belfast bags $1 million jackpot

Professional poker star Marty Smyth is today a relieved man after bagging a well earned $1 million jackpot at the Ladbrokes Poker Million VIII last weekend. While this was an obvious highlight for Smyth the fact that four of the final six players were from Ireland is something of a coup for the Emerald Isles.<br /> <br /> To say that Marty Smyth is "lucky" to have bagged the $1 million jackpot is a little unfair but he made a disastrous start to the championships and at one point was quoted at 66/1 to win. However, he overcame those massive odds to fight back from a terrible start and slowly began to climb back up the leaderboard. While Smyth is a professional poker player even he was amazed at the speed he was able to climb back up the table and reposition himself for the final few hands.<br /> <br /> Poker, as well has been a game of great skill, is also a game of luck although as with all good sports people you seem to attract your own luck in this game. The odd major gamble, some conservative playing and an ability to hold his nerve seemed to have been at the forefront of Marty Smyth's campaign which has seen him crowned the champion.
