Can the WSOP 2009 ever compete with this year's event?

As we approach 2009 many poker players are already looking towards a new World Series of Poker Championships with speculation as to whether the ongoing credit crunch and worldwide recession will impact at all upon the number of players and the jackpots available. There is serious concern that some of the major sponsors may struggle to raise sufficient funds to match the 2008 event and TV interest could fall unless the economy picks up.

With many sports TV channels looking to cut back on their coverage in 2009 and retain as much money in their businesses as possible we could see events such as poker struggle to make any progress. However, it has to be said that at this moment in time the online poker industry continues to prosper with more and more players looking to move online as the traditional casino industry struggles worldwide.

The 2008 World Series of Poker was most certainly the highest profile ever given to a poker tournament and the fact it was split between the main tournament and the final table, some months later, seemed to keep the interest of the poker playing community for longer than usual. Lessons have been learned with regards to poker promotion and poker marketing which will prove invaluable in the years to come.
