Will we see consolidation in the poker sector during 2009?

While 2008 has been a very difficult year for the worldwide economy and off-line casino industry there has literally been no stopping the online sector which has gone from strength to strength. However, as competition increases and experts suggest that growth rates will start to slow over the next 12 months there will almost certainly be some casualties. However, mergers and acquisitions in the poker industry are relatively rare because why would you acquire a business which depends upon customers who could go elsewhere tomorrow?

The more cost-effective method of improving and building an online poker business would be to invest more in marketing and promotions on the proviso that you are able to deliver what you promise. Even though there has been a massive increase in the number of online poker players of late, the vast majority are looking towards the better known names in the industry and this trend looks set to continue. Anyone who has played poker online will know that the income per game is fairly rigid for the poker company and it is just a case of increasing activity and turnover.

It will be interesting to see how the online poker industry develops over the next couple of years in the midst of a severe worldwide economic slowdown.
