A profile of Stu Ungar

Born in September 1953 Stu Ungar was the original bad boy of poker and died prematurely in November 1998 of a heart condition allegedly brought on by years of drug abuse. However despite the controversy surrounding his illustrious career Stu Ungar is still to this day the only person to have won the World Series of Poker Main event three times. He is also the only person who has ever won the Amarillo Slims Super Bowl of poker three times as well.<br /> <br /> Born into a Jewish family, Stu Ungar was exposed to the world of gambling and social clubs at a very early age due to his father's involvement in the industry. After the death of his father in 1968 he became involved with organised crime figures such as Victor Romano who would offer substantial protection for Stu Ungar in later years. Ungar was famed for his aggressive poker style and his regular verbal outbursts against players he thought were beneath him.<br /> <br /> His roll of World Series of poker bracelets includes a $365,000 hit in 1980, $375,000 in 1981, $95,000 in 1981, $110,000 in 1983 and the big $1 million hit in 1997. As his drug problems continued to take control of his life he dropped in and out of the poker scene on a number of occasions and was actually found dead after a hard fought poker game in 1998. Not everyone's cup of tea, Stu Ungar was the original bad boy of poker.
