Swedish poker players fall victim to an elaborate scam

It has been revealed that a number of Swedish online poker players have become embroiled in an elaborate scam which is seeing passwords, player IDs and bank details pass into the hands of fraudsters. Rather bizarrely, the fraudsters appear to have approached a number of online poker players directly posing as tax officials from the government. Using a package which contains various documents and a CD, said to be from the tax office, many players have logged on to the Internet, seen their information copied and succumbed to both ID theft and financial theft.<br /> <br /> This is something of a rather bizarre scheme but it is one which has been carried out with great confidence, something which appears to have led many people to believe it to be true. The authorities stumbled upon this major scam by accident when one of the recipients approached the authorities directly after receiving a package of documents and a CD from the fraudsters. <br /> <br /> It is not known how many people have been directly affected by the scam but forecasts suggest a significant number may have fallen prey to this new data harvesting method. Gambling companies, poker players and the authorities around the world are on red alert for similar attempts in their domestic market.
