Should you treat poker like you would an investment?

While this may sound something of a bizarre statement there are many similarities between poker and for example the commodities market where literally millions of pounds are dealt every hour of every day, some players win, some players lose and there are many different strategies in place. So how exactly can you compare poker to a commodity business?

In poker, for one person to win, a number of people have to lose which has strong similarities with the commodities market and invest markets in general.

In the commodities market you are gambling on the future direction of a particular commodity without knowing what this will be, which has great similarities to betting in poker "pre-flop".

In poker there are certain hands which you know will give you a significantly improved chance of taking the money on the table. In the commodities market there are a number of strategies which you can use to take advantage of price movements and lock in potential profits.

If you sit down and study the basics of poker, betting without full knowledge of the hand you will be dealt, the various strategies used and the fact each winner will create a number of losers (i.e. other “investors” will lose their investment “pot”), there are many similarities to an array of investment markets. You are effectively taking a gamble on the future by disseminating the information which is in front of you and available to you at that time. So is poker really a game of chance?
