Poker Tour Cancelled

Players hoping to compete at this year’s land-based Gala Casinos British Poker Tour (GCBPT) have had their hopes dashed following news that the tournament will not be returning for 2009. In a statement released earlier this week, Gala Casinos officially announced the end of the GCBPT, which was to have entered its third year, in favour of more online tournaments. 'While we’ve had two fantastic years running the Great British Poker Tour, we’ve now decided to look at a number of new events and promotions for 2009 that will not only excite our players but are of great value and are accessible to poker players of all levels,” said Mark O’Donnell, Tour Manager for the GCBPT. 'Through our poker websites at GalaPoker.co.uk, CoralPoker.com and EurobetPoker.com we are already planning to run more satellites than ever to the world’s biggest poker tournaments including the European Poker Tour, the World Series of Poker and Aussie Millions. 'Our online schedule also continues to evolve with over $14 million guaranteed in prizes every month and includes Guest List, a $10,000 new player freeroll, as well a new weekly $300,000 ‘ChampionChip’. We are also looking at offering a number of other significant tournaments over the next couple of months. Details will appear on GalaPoker.com, CoralPoker.com and EurobetPoker.com when these tournaments are confirmed.” The GCBPT was popular among UK-based players as an alternative to the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour and pulled in large numbers of competitors from six regional festivals. Joe Beevers won the inaugural event while Alan Vinson took home $119,340 for after emerging victorious last year.
