Is the EU afraid of the US gambling authority?

Since the George Bush administration effectively banned online gambling in the US, by "leaning" on online payment companies, there has been a significant backlash around the world at what is seen by many as an illegal ban. However, the EU has done very little to fight the corner of European gambling companies, many of whom have been taken to the brink of collapse by the sudden change of heart by the US authorities. The European Union today stands accused of lacking the courage to take on the US gambling authorities and ensure a level playing field for all participants.

While there is evidence that the EU has been fairly lacklustre in its approach and its consultation with the US government, we could be about to see some light at the end of the tunnel with suggestions that the US authorities are willing to change their mind. This would not only let the EU off the hook but also give a welcome boost to many European and worldwide online casino companies who have been chomping at the bit to get back into the American market.

There is also a suspicion that the US authorities are acting in the best interests of the US casino industry which has suffered dramatically over the last 12 months - maybe the online arena could offer some short-term respite?
