Are the French authorities set to legalise online poker?

A new bill is going through the French parliament which looks set to legalise online poker, and other online gambling activities, possibly as early as 2010. This is a significant turnabout from the French authorities who have historically been very protectionist in their running of state monopolies such as gambling. However, the fine print of the proposed bill may well change the face of online poker forever with a number of factors to be considered.

While we still await full details of the proposed changes it looks as though there will be a 2% tax levied on each online poker win as well as the traditional tax charge to online poker companies. The authorities have taken the view that rather than ban 25,000 websites from access to the French population they are more than happy to issue licences to those who will appreciate and respect public and social order.

Even though the proposal has yet to be rubberstamped by the French authorities it looks as though changes are afoot which could well be duplicated in other areas of the world. The US online poker sector was the largest in the world prior to the ban by the US authorities although there are hopes that the US government could take a similar line to the French government.
