Illinois Could Legalise Online Betting

Fans of horseracing in the American state of Illinois could soon be able to wager on the outcomes of races online if new Governor Pat Quinn signs legislation recently approved by the General Assembly. The Midwestern state is currently facing a budget deficit for the next two years of around $11.5 billion and had hoped to offset some of this shortfall by legalising video poker machines in bars, truck stops and social clubs while also privatising the Illinois Lottery. However, these plans are currently tied up in political wrangling with Quinn yet to sign either measure into law. If approved, this latest measure would see Illinois horse tracks partner with online sportsbetting sites, which would serve as electronic off-track betting parlours. Customers would be required to establish accounts before they could wager on the outcome of races using their personal computers. Any losses would be deducted from a prepaid account while wins would be added. Supporters of Illinois Senate Bill 1298 revealed that it could generate $1.5 million a year for the state’s coffers while also potentially helping an ailing horseracing industry. But, opponents state that it would seriously contribute to the number of people suffering from problem gambling.
