Wednesday 24th June 2009 ‘Vikidin’ Wins PokerStars.com Sunday Guarantee
After entering the final table well below the other competitors in terms of the size of his stack, online poker player ‘Vikidin’ won the PokerStars.com $1.5 Million Guarantee Sunday event to take home over $220,000.
Although the regular online tournament normally sees over 7,000 players, last weekend’s event only featured 6,990 runners, which required PokerStars.com to add a little to the pot in order to guarantee money was handed out to the top 1,080 competitors.
The final table started with only eight players instead of the customary nine after two all-ins, ‘Maxxx72alba’ and ‘nsemog77’, lost at the same time before the final bubble. Subsequently, the player with the most chips before going bust, ‘Maxxx72alba’, was credited with the ninth place finish and its $11,625 prize despite never sitting down while ‘nsemog77’ took home $8,250.
‘Vikidin’ caught several pocket aces at the right time and began whittling down the other competitors’ leads until ‘Aftret’ crashed out in seventh taking $32,250. Online competitor ‘Soelberg’ was the next to leave in sixth spot with $46,500 while ‘Fulle’ saw his stack get smaller and smaller before he left the table with $61,500 for fifth.
Next to go was ‘predator.ger’ in fourth for $79,500 after he shoved 3.5 million chips into the middle of the table with the strength of pocket kings. However, an ace of diamonds on the turn saw ‘Vikidin’ take the pot.
As three-handed play began, ‘Vikidin’ was well in the lead followed by ‘villepn’ and ‘unfadeable1’. But, the leader would lose his dominant position and began asking for a deal, which was promptly turned down by ‘villepn’.
However, after ‘Vikidin’ won the next hand to send ‘villepn’ home in third with $120,000, the two went to work on a deal. This saw ‘Vikidin’ guaranteed $190,000 while ‘unfadeable1’ would get $170,000 with a heads-up battle to decide where the remaining $30,555 went.
Heads-up play began and both players were cautious with ‘Vikidin’ extending his lead slightly. During the final hand, ‘Vikidin’ had a lead of 53 million chips against the 16 million for ‘unfadeable1' and it was soon all over as the victor claimed the remaining $30,555 to take his final tally to $220,555. For his second place finish, ‘unfadeable1’ walked away with a very respectable $170,000.
