Economy Delays Frank Legislation

In the US, proposed Federal legislation introduced by Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank that would overturn the unpopular Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) if passed has had its initial hearings delayed until at least September. The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection And Enforcement Act was introduced by the Democrat in May and would establish a Federal regulatory and enforcement framework to license online operators. However, according to numerous reports attributing the Poker Players Alliance grassroots advocacy group, Congress will now concentrate on legislation to help improve the American economy instead of Frank’s bill. As a consequence, the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection And Enforcement Act will not be heard until after the summer recess. The proposed legislation was orginally due to go before the House Financial Services Committee, in which Frank serves as the Chairman, this week. The Committee must pass any legislation before it can be voted on by the full House Of Representatives but it now looks like 2010 may be a more reasonable target for Frank’s legislation.
