Monday 20th July 2009 Final Nine For WSOP 2009
After almost two months of competition and 57 events, the final table for this year’s World Series Of Poker (WSOP) is now set with the lucky nine due to return to Las Vegas in 116 days to play for the top prize of $8.546 million.
The nine names for the $10,000 buy-in main event were confirmed after Jordan Smith crashed out in tenth spot on Wednesday evening at the Rio All-Suite Hotel And Casino to take home $896,730. This left Phil Ivey, Eric Buchman, Darvin Moon, Kevin Schaffel, Joe Cada, Steven Begleiter, Antoine Saout, Jeff Shulman and James Akenhead in the running for poker’s richest reward although the first player to depart will still take home $1.26 million for ninth spot.
'So, I guess I'm going to actually start watching some poker on television,' 33-year-old professional player Ivey told The Associated Press news service.
California-born Ivey is one of the best poker players in the world and is tipped to win it all this time around after finishing tenth in 2003, 20th in 2005 and 23rd in 2002 for a total of $3.46 million.
'So far I've just made the final table, so it's a pretty big accomplishment,' said Ivey.
'Winning it would be top of the line.'
Ivey will begin play with five percent of the chips in play, 9.75 million, while Moon, a self-employed logger from Oakland, Maryland, currently leads with 30 percent.
'Everyone at this table is way better than I am,' said 45-year-old Moon.
'Something is helping me.'
The player finishing in eighth spot will take home $1.3 million while the seventh placed competitor will earn $1.4 million. Just over $1.5 million will be awarded to the player crashing out in sixth with $1.953 million awaiting the fifth best competitor. A very healthy $2.5 is up for grabs for fourth with $3.4 million for third while the runner-up will walk away with $5.182 million.
The remaining nine will compete beginning on November 7 until just two are left. This pair will then go head-to-head starting on November 10 until the WSOP 2009 champion is crowned with ESPN set to broadcast the action the next day.
