Two brothers guilty of robbing 12 people at a poker game

Two brothers found guilty of robbing 12 people at a poker game in February 2002 were each sentenced to 283 years in prison on Friday.

Ocean County Superior Court Judge James N. Citta cited the lengthy criminal records of Lawrence Gay, 51, and Kenneth Gay, 54, both of Englishtown, and said the intent of the sentence was to keep both men in prison for the rest of their natural lives.

Lawrence and Kenneth Gay were found guilty of robbing 11 men and one woman at a card game in William Hine's garage on Point View Road in Brick. The group played cards each Monday night for more than 20 years.

The brothers entered the garage wearing dark clothing and ski masks. They brandished two guns each. All of the 12 poker players had their hands bound with duct tape. Each poker player put up $200 to get into the game. Authorities said the brothers demanded the wallets, jewellery and cash of the players and made off with about $15,000 in cash.

Citta said he imposed jail time on the brothers for each of the 12 people at the game.
