Pokerzone Televises Backgammon Event

The first televised game of Backgammon was shown on Wednesday 7th October. The event was aired from a tournament staged in Fairmont, Monte Carlo in July 2005. The event involved over 500 players, all competing for the title of World Champion and the small matter of a $100,000 prize.

The 30th World Backgammon Championships boasted many of the world’s great players, such as the top American players, Mike Svobodny and Paul Magriel from Las Vegas and the Russian starlet Victoria Smirnoff.

The program will offer a behind the scenes peek into the flamboyant world of Backgammon, which often attracts outrageous characters who wager vast sums on the highly strategic and complicated contests. Pokerzone will be following-up this event with a three-part documentary, Ernie’s Game, about a high-stakes UK player, on 16th November. The programs are part of pokerzone’s drive to raise the profile of Backgammon.

Pokerzone’s Director of Programming, Sam Orams said, “Backgammon and Poker complement each other perfectly and offer a similarly engrossing experience to the viewer. We’re doubly delighted to add to our list of ‘world-firsts’ with World Championship Backgammon. After the stunning success of Poker Night Live, our nightly flagship online poker show, we are confident that Backgammon will make an equally big splash. It seems our viewers just can’t get enough of high stakes skill gaming, a fact that is reflected by our consistently increasing ratings.”
