Police Raid Illegal Virginia Beach Poker Ring

If you’re a hotel owner looking for a raft of bad publicity, you could do a lot worse than host an illegal poker ring. And this is exactly what’s been happening at the Tropicana Hotel in Virginia Beach, where police have just busted a poker ring that has apparently been playing games since the beginning of 2006.

An anonymous caller told of games of high stakes Texas Hold’em, a story that was verified after undercover officers spied on two tables of players paying for chips and dealing into the game. At that point, police helpfully pointed out to the poker hopefuls that their activities were, of course, illegal.

The sting comes as hysteria seems to be growing about the burgeoning popularity of poker. However, this popularity seems to have passed at least one person: the hotel owner, who claims to know nothing about what’s been going on.
