Canadian Losses May Improve US Odds to Win Men’s Hockey Gold

February 23, 2006 (Miami, FL) - After Canada’s inconceivable losses to Switzerland and Finland over the weekend, odds of the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team winning Olympic gold might have improved, but Tuesday’s win over the Czech Republic leaves Canada the team to beat. The Men’s Hockey Medal Round will be played Sunday, February 26th; SportingbetUSA.com will post odds on Saturday. With many low scoring games so far, handicappers suggest there may be value now in the “over” play.

The performance thus far of the favored Canadian Men’s team has been very surprising. After an easy time of it against Italy, the Canucks looked disinterested in games against Switzerland and Finland, not only losing, but also failing to score a single goal.

“Our customers were playing the OVER totals in both of Canada’s losses,” commented SportingbetUSA.com Manager Tony Delgado. “Needless to say, the Canadian NHL players didn’t deliver. The same thing happened in Salt Lake City four years ago. They were lethargic until their chief Wayne Gretzky lit the fire under them that led to their gold medal win over the United States.”

“The big ice surface takes a bit of time getting used to, but make no mistake about it, Canada is far and away the best team” says Delgado. “Thornton, Sakik, Gagne, Nash and other power forwards will step up when the games count. The preliminary rounds are a sham and the top teams do more sightseeing than practicing, so look for both the Canadians and U.S. to turn things up a notch”.

Men’s Slalom is another Olympic sport that’s been popular with SportingbetUSA.com bettors. Updated odds were posted today with American Ted Ligety at 12-1. The 21-year-old has never finished higher than second in a World Cup race but he's enjoying a remarkably consistent season. He was in the top-six in the first six races, earning two podium spots along the way. Austrian Benjamin Raich is the favorite to win the Men’s Slalom gold medal at 3-1.

Updated odds on America’s chances for Olympic gold are updated daily at SportingbetUSA.com.
