Sportingbet Looks to EU for Dispute Resolution

Sportingbet will turn to EU authorities in a dispute with Hungary's Gambling Commission over advertising.

The Gambling Commission argues that Sportingbet's advertising in Hungary is illegal because the company is not licenced as a gambling operator in the country, as required by law.

Sportingbet is arguing that any prohibition of their advertising would be illegal. They advertise their services in Hungarian on the internet, encouraging Hungarian citizens to bet on sports or play poker online. They believe that prohibiting a private company from performing the same activity as a state-owned company goes against EU principles.

The Gambling Commission added that because there are no uniform regulations on gambling in the EU, it is up to each member state to determine its own rules.
