Louisiana Heads-Up Legal Battle Continues

The battle for relaxed poker laws in Louisiana continues apace. After Governor Blanco threw her weight against any legislative changes and caused some serious disquiet amongst State Senators, the House itself has now voted down the bill by just two votes. This means that for the time being, any attempts to allow poker games to take place in bars and restaurants will be put on hold.

Representative Triche, who put the bill forward in the first place, has been told though that he can bring the bill back to the vote after it has been amended. The crux of the bill is how businesses profit from gambling. Triche believes that his clarification would mean that bar owners would not be allowed to take a cut of any proceedings or supply any gambling equipment, right down to the cards and chips. Also, advertising will be strictly prohibited. Opponents say that just by selling more drinks and food that bars will profit from gambling and therefore it should remain illegal. Whatever happens, Blanco has said she will veto. Still, it makes for a great poker face off.
